History of organized pest Surveillance and monitoring programme in India

In late 1960s high yielding varieties of Rice Taichung -1(TN-1),and IR8 were introduced to maximise crop production..Lateron these varieties were found widely attacked by Green leaf hoppers,(Nephotetix  sp )RTV and BLB during 1969 kharief season in UP,Bihar,WB,Orissa and MP.
Certral Govt of India along with Ford foundation in collaboration with state Govts had started adhoc  Rice surveys,with periodicity of 10 days during kharief 1970 onwards .This was the real beginning of organised crop pest Surveillance programme in India.
 During 4th five year plan12 Central Surveillance stations were established were increased to 19 lateron .
